Steve Bigler
The Classic
Master of Style
World
class professional longboarder, Steve Bigler, knows style. He's
been competing in the contest arena as a top competitor most
of his surfing life.
Bigler
was the first to test Ugly's innovative boardshorts and said:
"These trunks...well...finally, someone got it right. I
felt at home as soon as I put them on...any of the Ugly gear
I tested...the t-shirts, pants, and everything were real soft
and comfortable, like I had worn them in and they were my favorite
to wear."
Steve
developed into a true stylist while living the dream of surfing
around the world for the better part of his 59 years. "Finding
the comfort zone is what the chase is all about, isn't it?"
he asks rhetorically with a broad smile.
One
of his early escapades was surfing at Malibu when he was captured
on film for the classic movie, Endless Summer. Watching him
then and seeing him surf now, one must think to themselves:
Steve has found the fountain of youth. He surfs now just like
he did then. "Well, Malibu is one of my favorite spots."
states Bigler, giving cradit to one of the most inspirational
waves in the world.
Steve's
style really stands out when you see him surf against four or
five of his fellow competitors in a finals heat. His hallmark
maneuver is his straight-up stance with his arms at his side,
like he's standing at attention; He does it in his turn, nose
ride and in some of the most precarious positions on a wave.
Like he's saying, "What other challenges have you got for
me now, Wave?"
His
poses are a favorite of photographers. Steve has graced the
covers of many surf magazines.
His
fearless, "Enjoy it to the last drop!" attitude started
at age 16 when he gained respect in the line up with the big
wave crew on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. He showed he had
what it takes to catch the biggest waves and ride them effortlessly.
His
self-designed quiver of surfboards, developed over many years,
enables him to pick the best board for the break. He is a fierce
competitor, winning many big and small wave events. His most
recent is the Dale Velzy Classic on September 24, 2005 winning
the Grand Masters first place award.
His
much envied surfing career started when he was fourteen years
old while living in Santa Barbara. His first custom surfboard
was made specially by legendary surfboard shaper, Reynolds Yater.
Steve
likes to tell tails about his adventures; from surfing to his
second love, sailing. Listening to him tell stories about experiences
in his life makes you believe in miracles because they are of
amazing near-death experiences, harrowing encounters and magical
moments.
He
is in the fraternity of Kings whose tales are legendary. He
is known at most beaches in California and Hawaii, and greeted
by the locals with great admiration. All enjoy to hear about
his adventures because it brings out the "kid" in
us.
Characteristically,
as the captain of his own vessel, he keeps his cell phone off
most of the time so as not to have his moment to moment experiences
interrupted. "Imagine having your waterproof cell phone
ring just as you are about to catch a wave. Well that's what
it's coming to. Are you gonna give up the wave to answer the
phone? I wouldn't. But then again, what a time to be phoneless."
Steve
endorses Ugly Clothing and serves to test men's surfwear designs
while he also promotes sales of his model surfboard, "The
Classic." He recently renewed his contract with Con Surfboards
to manufacture The Classic - Buy one at: www.consurfboards.com
"Style
is about being there in the moment and anticipating what's coming
at you down the line so when you get there you can pull it off
- whatever it is - smoothly and elegantly. That's style."
