YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT The industrial age has released a tremendous amount of carbon dioxide and fluorocarbons into our atmosphere, depleting the ozone and creating global warming. A year ago, scientists forecast polar caps melting and ocean levels rising at a critical level by 2020. Now they are updating their forecast and stating that the process is happening much faster than anticipated. Ugly is asking all surfers to act as stewards of the ocean. Surfers are like the canary in the coal mine and have already experienced the ill-effects of water pollution and realize, more so than most, that water is the life-blood of this blue planet. SURFERS: STAND UP AND BE COUNTED! "It's very easy to put waste materials into the ocean and, presumably, they (the waste) are 'Out of site - Out of mind.' That's always the logical that people have used when they have used the coastal ocean for waste disposal." stated leading Marine Microbiologist, Dr. Jay Grimes, former Director of the Department of Energy and now Dean of Marine Sciences and Director of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory at The University of Southern Mississippi. He continued to say, "Or, some people have said 'Dilution is the solution.' falsely believing that the ocean is so infinite in its capacity to absorb wastes, that we don't need to worry about it." He added. "Materials do not instantly dissipate and dilute but instead they can meander for miles and miles, hundreds of miles." Disease causing bacteria can reduce in size and go into a dormant state, pass through chlorination, then revive when it finds a host body. Current testing methodology of Coliform and Fecal Coliform can not detect these disease causing bacteria. However, Gene Probes can. Government institutions refuse to use Gene Probe testing because of concerns regarding cost. Is it the concern that treatment plants will have to be shut down throughout the country if it's found that their treatment process doesn't work? Or, that costs of operating are too High? Why doesn't the government use better testing methodology? If there were less diseases, more people would live longer and medical care would cost less. Diseases kill more people than wars do. What can you do? Well, apart from joining us to help restore the eco-system locally, you can take responsibility for what you, as an individual, can do. Check out Wikipedia's information about the calculator's to measure your carbon imprint. Speak out when you see someone irresponsibly dispose of their waste. Promote respect for the eco-system. Be creative and find new ways to help promote a healthy environment. Communicate with your government and demand more environmental law enforcement.
